Cuir Mauresque
Cuir Mauresque by Serge Lutens is an unisex eau de parfum from 1996 in the niche price tier. It opens with orange blossom, mandarin and cumin, moves into leather, styrax, clove and nutmeg and dries down to musk, amber, cedarwood and myrrh. Expect around 10 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Orange Blossom Sweet, soapy and sunny. Neroli's warmer sibling.
- Mandarin Soft, sweet, almost powdery citrus. Gentler than orange.
- Cumin Warm, spicy and unmistakably sweaty. Divides rooms.
Heart
- Leather Smoky, dry and a bit animal. Can be a new jacket or an old saddle.
- Styrax Smoky, leathery balsam. Slightly rubbery and dark.
- Clove Hot, dry and dental. Powerful — a little goes a long way.
- Nutmeg Warm, woody and slightly sweet. Cosy without being gourmand.
Dry-down
- Musk Warm, skin-like and slightly sweet. Makes a fragrance feel like you.
- Amber Warm, golden and resinous. Not a real material — a blend that glows.
- Cedarwood Dry, pencil-shaving woodiness. Clean and structural.
- Myrrh Bitter, smoky resin. Ancient-smelling and slightly cool.
