Sartorial
Sartorial by Penhaligon's is a masculine-leaning eau de toilette from 2010 in the niche price tier. It opens with aldehydes, violet leaf, neroli, cardamom, black pepper and ginger, moves into beeswax, cyclamen, lavender and leather and dries down to oakmoss, tonka bean, honey, patchouli, cedarwood and white musk. Expect around 7 hours of wear, and it projects at a moderate level.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Aldehydes Fizzy, soapy, slightly waxy. The 'sparkle' at the top of Chanel No. 5.
- Violet Leaf Crisp, watery green with a metallic edge. Cool rather than fresh.
- Neroli Distilled orange blossom. Green, soapy and elegant.
- Cardamom Cool, aromatic spice with a eucalyptus lift. Smells expensive.
- Black Pepper Dry and prickly. Gives a fragrance grip and a bit of bite.
- Ginger Warm, zesty and slightly soapy. Bridges citrus and spice.
Heart
- Beeswax Honeyed and waxy with a faint barnyard hum underneath.
- Cyclamen Watery, green and airy. Used to make florals feel light.
- Lavender Herbal, clean, slightly medicinal. Barbershop in one note.
- Leather Smoky, dry and a bit animal. Can be a new jacket or an old saddle.
Dry-down
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
- Tonka Bean Almond, hay and vanilla in one. Warm and slightly nutty.
- Honey Sweet, waxy and slightly animalic. Can smell dirty in large doses.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Cedarwood Dry, pencil-shaving woodiness. Clean and structural.
- White Musk Clean, soft, laundry-like. The 'smells like nothing but better' note.
