Shalimar
Shalimar by Guerlain is a feminine-leaning eau de parfum from 1925 in the premium price tier. It opens with bergamot, lemon and mandarin, moves into iris, jasmine and rose and dries down to vanilla, tonka bean, opoponax and leather. Expect around 11 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Mandarin Soft, sweet, almost powdery citrus. Gentler than orange.
Heart
- Iris Cool, powdery, slightly carroty and expensive. The luxury note.
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
Dry-down
- Vanilla Sweet, creamy and warm. The most comforting note in perfumery.
- Tonka Bean Almond, hay and vanilla in one. Warm and slightly nutty.
- Opoponax Sweet myrrh. Balsamic, warm and slightly medicinal.
- Leather Smoky, dry and a bit animal. Can be a new jacket or an old saddle.
