Habit Rouge
Habit Rouge by Guerlain is a masculine-leaning eau de toilette from 1965 in the premium price tier. It opens with lemon, bergamot and sweet orange, moves into rose, carnation and cinnamon and dries down to vanilla, leather, benzoin and labdanum. Expect around 8 hours of wear, and it projects at a moderate level.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Sweet Orange Juicy and cheerful. The friendliest citrus there is.
Heart
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
- Carnation Spicy, clove-like floral. Old-school and a bit peppery.
- Cinnamon Sweet heat. Reads festive, sometimes to a fault.
Dry-down
- Vanilla Sweet, creamy and warm. The most comforting note in perfumery.
- Leather Smoky, dry and a bit animal. Can be a new jacket or an old saddle.
- Benzoin Sweet balsamic resin. Vanilla-adjacent but drier.
- Labdanum Sticky, leathery resin. Dark honey and old books.
