Lucius Maximus
Lucius Maximus by Fragrance Du Bois is an unisex eau de parfum in the luxury price tier. It opens with pink pepper, bergamot, mandarin and bitter orange, moves into coffee, orange blossom, cedarwood and georgywood and dries down to vanilla, tonka bean, cypriol, vetiver and akigalawood. Expect around 9 hours of wear, and it projects at a moderate level.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Pink Pepper Fizzy, rosy and bright. Adds sparkle without heat.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Mandarin Soft, sweet, almost powdery citrus. Gentler than orange.
- Bitter Orange Marmalade without the sugar. Sour and slightly medicinal.
Heart
- Coffee Roasted, bitter and dark. Adds edge to sweet fragrances.
- Orange Blossom Sweet, soapy and sunny. Neroli's warmer sibling.
- Cedarwood Dry, pencil-shaving woodiness. Clean and structural.
- Georgywood A lab-made wood with a velvety, ambery hum. A close cousin of Iso E Super.
Dry-down
- Vanilla Sweet, creamy and warm. The most comforting note in perfumery.
- Tonka Bean Almond, hay and vanilla in one. Warm and slightly nutty.
- Cypriol Also called nagarmotha. Smoky, leathery, earthy — a vetiver relative.
- Vetiver Dry, earthy, smoky grass root. Smells like soil and citrus peel.
- Akigalawood Patchouli with the earth taken out. Peppery, lightly spiced dry wood that makes a base feel expensive.
