Sunflowers
Sunflowers by Elizabeth Arden is a feminine-leaning eau de toilette from 1993 in the budget price tier. It opens with melon, bergamot, lemon and peach, moves into cyclamen, jasmine, rose and osmanthus and dries down to sandalwood, musk, oakmoss and amber. Expect around 5 hours of wear, and it projects at a moderate level.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Melon Soft, watery sweetness. Often paired with aquatics.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Peach Fuzzy, warm and slightly creamy. Soft rather than sharp.
Heart
- Cyclamen Watery, green and airy. Used to make florals feel light.
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
- Osmanthus Apricot-and-leather floral. Unusual, warm and very wearable.
Dry-down
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Musk Warm, skin-like and slightly sweet. Makes a fragrance feel like you.
- Oakmoss Damp forest floor. Bitter, green and the backbone of every chypre.
- Amber Warm, golden and resinous. Not a real material — a blend that glows.
