Dune
Dune by Dior is a feminine-leaning eau de toilette from 1991 in the designer price tier. It opens with mandarin, bergamot and peony, moves into jasmine, rose and lily of the valley and dries down to vanilla, musk, benzoin and patchouli. Expect around 8 hours of wear, and it projects at a moderate level.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Mandarin Soft, sweet, almost powdery citrus. Gentler than orange.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Peony Pink, watery and slightly peppery. Modern and inoffensive.
Heart
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
- Lily of the Valley Clean, green, dewy floral. Reads as 'fresh laundry' to most people.
Dry-down
- Vanilla Sweet, creamy and warm. The most comforting note in perfumery.
- Musk Warm, skin-like and slightly sweet. Makes a fragrance feel like you.
- Benzoin Sweet balsamic resin. Vanilla-adjacent but drier.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
