N°5
N°5 by Chanel is a feminine-leaning eau de parfum from 1921 in the premium price tier. It opens with aldehydes, ylang-ylang and neroli, moves into jasmine, rose and iris and dries down to sandalwood, vanilla, musk and patchouli. Expect around 10 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Aldehydes Fizzy, soapy, slightly waxy. The 'sparkle' at the top of Chanel No. 5.
- Ylang-Ylang Banana-custard floral. Rich, tropical and slightly rubbery.
- Neroli Distilled orange blossom. Green, soapy and elegant.
Heart
- Jasmine Heady, sweet and slightly animal underneath. Rarely subtle.
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
- Iris Cool, powdery, slightly carroty and expensive. The luxury note.
Dry-down
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Vanilla Sweet, creamy and warm. The most comforting note in perfumery.
- Musk Warm, skin-like and slightly sweet. Makes a fragrance feel like you.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
