Purpose

Purpose by Amouage is an unisex eau de parfum in the luxury price tier. It opens with bergamot, pink pepper, frankincense and pimento, moves into rose, vetiver, sandalwood and papyrus and dries down to saffron, suede, incense and akigalawood. Expect around 10 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.

Opening

Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
Pink Pepper Fizzy, rosy and bright. Adds sparkle without heat.
Frankincense Bright, peppery, church-like resin. Lifts and cools a fragrance.
Pimento Allspice — clove, cinnamon and nutmeg at once. Hot and rounded.

Heart

Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
Vetiver Dry, earthy, smoky grass root. Smells like soil and citrus peel.
Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
Papyrus Dry, smoky, papery wood. Vetiver's quieter cousin.

Dry-down

Saffron Leathery, medicinal and slightly metallic. The signature of modern niche.
Suede Soft, powdery leather. Much gentler than the real thing.
Incense Smoky, dry and meditative. Adds gravity to anything.
Akigalawood Patchouli with the earth taken out. Peppery, lightly spiced dry wood that makes a base feel expensive.
