Overture Man
Overture Man by Amouage is a masculine-leaning eau de parfum in the luxury price tier. It opens with grapefruit, cardamom, cumin, ginger, nutmeg and saffron, moves into cinnamon, mastic, benzoin, labdanum, patchouli and geranium and dries down to sandalwood, leather, clary sage and incense. Expect around 10 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Grapefruit Bitter, slightly sweaty citrus. More grown-up than lemon.
- Cardamom Cool, aromatic spice with a eucalyptus lift. Smells expensive.
- Cumin Warm, spicy and unmistakably sweaty. Divides rooms.
- Ginger Warm, zesty and slightly soapy. Bridges citrus and spice.
- Nutmeg Warm, woody and slightly sweet. Cosy without being gourmand.
- Saffron Leathery, medicinal and slightly metallic. The signature of modern niche.
Heart
- Cinnamon Sweet heat. Reads festive, sometimes to a fault.
- Mastic Resinous pine-and-lemon. The chew of Greek gum.
- Benzoin Sweet balsamic resin. Vanilla-adjacent but drier.
- Labdanum Sticky, leathery resin. Dark honey and old books.
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Geranium Rosy and minty at once. Reads masculine more often than not.
Dry-down
- Sandalwood Creamy, milky wood. Soft and almost edible.
- Leather Smoky, dry and a bit animal. Can be a new jacket or an old saddle.
- Clary Sage Softer, sweeter sage with an ambery undertone. Warm and herbal.
- Incense Smoky, dry and meditative. Adds gravity to anything.
