Outlands
Outlands by Amouage is an unisex eau de parfum in the luxury price tier. It opens with cardamom, bergamot, lemon, sichuan pepper, elemi and frankincense, moves into patchouli, rose, orange blossom, cumin, geranium and davana and dries down to benzoin, labdanum, amber, ambergris, frankincense and opoponax. Expect around 10 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Cardamom Cool, aromatic spice with a eucalyptus lift. Smells expensive.
- Bergamot Sharp citrus with a faint bitter edge. The opening of about half of all men's fragrances.
- Lemon Clean, sour, instantly recognisable. Bright but burns off fast.
- Sichuan Pepper Buzzy, citrus-tinged pepper. Tingles rather than burns.
- Elemi Peppery resin with a lemon-pine lift. Bright and dry.
- Frankincense Bright, peppery, church-like resin. Lifts and cools a fragrance.
Heart
- Patchouli Damp earth and dark chocolate. Either you love it or it's your least favourite note.
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
- Orange Blossom Sweet, soapy and sunny. Neroli's warmer sibling.
- Cumin Warm, spicy and unmistakably sweaty. Divides rooms.
- Geranium Rosy and minty at once. Reads masculine more often than not.
- Davana Odd and gorgeous — apricot jam, rum and dried herbs at once.
Dry-down
- Benzoin Sweet balsamic resin. Vanilla-adjacent but drier.
- Labdanum Sticky, leathery resin. Dark honey and old books.
- Amber Warm, golden and resinous. Not a real material — a blend that glows.
- Ambergris Salty, animal, sun-warmed skin. Marine and musky at once.
- Frankincense Bright, peppery, church-like resin. Lifts and cools a fragrance.
- Opoponax Sweet myrrh. Balsamic, warm and slightly medicinal.
