Rare Reef
Rare Reef by Afnan is an unisex eau de parfum in the budget price tier. It opens with blackcurrant, sweet orange, citron, mint, coriander and grapefruit, moves into apricot, basil, rose and violet leaf and dries down to fig, dates, ambrette seed and amberwood. Expect around 8 hours of wear, and it projects strongly.
Notes, explained
Opening
- Blackcurrant Tart, dark and slightly catty. Adds bite to florals.
- Sweet Orange Juicy and cheerful. The friendliest citrus there is.
- Citron Thick-skinned citrus, more zest than juice. Waxy and bright.
- Mint Cold and tingly. Great in small doses, toothpaste in large ones.
- Coriander Warm seed spice, slightly citrusy. A quiet workhorse.
- Grapefruit Bitter, slightly sweaty citrus. More grown-up than lemon.
Heart
- Apricot Warm, jammy stone fruit. Often hiding inside osmanthus.
- Basil Peppery herb with an aniseed lift. Culinary but wearable.
- Rose Can be jammy, green, peppery or soapy depending on the type. Not one smell.
- Violet Leaf Crisp, watery green with a metallic edge. Cool rather than fresh.
Dry-down
- Fig Green, milky and jammy at once. One of the most interesting fruits in perfume.
- Dates Sticky, jammy dried fruit. The backbone of Middle Eastern gourmands.
- Ambrette Seed The only natural musk. Pear-like, warm and slightly boozy.
- Amberwood Dry synthetic warmth, sharper than amber. Everywhere in modern masculines.
